SPRING NEWSLETTER 2009

Dear Member,

A Happy New Year to you all, OK I know it's not quite spring but we have a couple of reminders for you so I am getting the Spring newsletter out early this year.

I hope that you all coped with the snow over the festive season and most importantly you were able to keep our four legged friends sufficiently hayed, watered and entertained!

As is customary with this newsletter there is quite a lot of factual updates so you will find enclosed a current list of the committee with their contact numbers - please contact us if you have suggestions for the area; the results of the 2009 Area Points Competition; dates for your diary and a list of the Northern Breeder qualifying shows.

Below is an update of what the area has been busy with since the last newsletter and gives details of what is planned going forward:

FOAL AND WINTER SHOW held at Mill Lane Stables, Nr. Selby in November. This years show was well supported with the Supreme foals of the show going to Mr Beaumont's Welsh Section B colt Dawthorn Diplomat with the section D Kylebeck Churchill in reserve.
In the ridden section the Supreme Mini went to Nielson family's Tamberley of Hutton, with the equivalent Open Ridden Supreme going to Helen Lister and Village Gladiator.

Thanks go to the small sub-committee which led on this and also to the exhibitors for their continued support.

AGM held at the Bridge Inn, Wetherby in early December where there was a good turnout of members. We were fortunate to be able to welcome Julian Rishworth from Minster Equine Clinic to give a pre-lunch talk on pony breeding. As you'd imagine this was a topic close to many members hearts and could therefore have gone on for a long time had the Bridge Inn not been demanding we ate!
I'm happy to report the actual meeting was relatively un-eventful, the main area for further consideration in committee is the area points competition. Members who do it love it and see it expanding, unfortunately we had only 26 entries from 9 members, so finding a sponsor to support it is not easy.

AREA POINTS AWARDS These awards were presented at the AGM. A full list of results is enclosed. The Supreme went to a ridden Welsh section D, Ffoslas Welsh Express and the reserve to the riding pony youngstock entry, Manorview Royal Celebration. This competition was generously sponsored for the final time by www.hairbeautyworlddrivein.com, many thanks to them for their generousity over the last 4 years.
Thanks also go to Malcolm Pickles for running what is a very time consuming task. Details of the 2010 competition will be available on the website or in the early summer newsletter.

ELECTION OF COMMITTEE A ballot was not necessary this year. There were no new nominations, but fortunately the 3 committee members due to stand down agreed to continue for a further term, as has our President Mrs Sue Hide.

FINANCIAL REPORT The Treasurer reported the Area remained in good financial health. Sponsorship at the main show was up in 2009 which all the committee were grateful for, however the costs at the Great Yorkshire Showground meant the show still made a loss of around £600.
The financial report showed this small loss, but that the Clinic, Foal and Spring shows had all made small profits to help offset the loss so all in all 2009 'remained on the right side of the balancesheet'.

AREA CHAIRMANS AWARD This year the award went to Mrs Suzanne Lee, the breeder of Chagford Lewis, who had been supreme pony at both the RIHS and HOYS in 2008 - no mean feat for any breeder.

OLYMPIA TRIP - this years Olympia trip was more problematic than normal due to snow and unforgiving road conditions. Our intrepid adventurers, carefully driven on a luxury bus still managed to arrive just in time to see the first class and witness the Yorkshire bred Pumphill Buckthorn take the reserve spot. Congratulations to all and in particular to his breeder David Hinde who was reported to be in very good form on the coach trip home!

TOPSPEC DRESSAGE QUALIFIER - The area is holding its first Topspec Dressage competition qualifier at the Richmond Equestrian Centre on Saturday 6th February. Further detail are available from Margaret Furness on 01347 868250 or Sue Foster on 01748 811295 or www.recevents@btconnect.com. Good luck to those that are able to attend, but given the current weather conditions I would advise you to check before travelling.

ALLISTER HOOD CLINIC February 12th - 14th 2010 at Stanley Grange Stud - contact Stanley Grange on 01642 722386 now to book the few remaining places.

NATIONAL PONY SOCIETY AGM is to be held at the Hilton Hotel, Newbury on Saturday 13th March. Hopefully some area members will be able to make the meeting and perhaps more enjoyably the black tie dinner which will follow.

SPRING SHOW RICHMOND EQUESTRIAN CENTRE April 25th 2010.
I am pleased to be able to tell you we have again been given a qualifier for the NPS/PRP/RAC EQUINE RESCUE M.& M. WHP Royal International Horse Show Championship, plus a 'Derby House' in-hand qualifier for the North of England show. Schedules are ready and being sent to last years exhibitors, anyone else requiring one should either contact the Secretary Mrs Norma Thompson or download a copy from the website. Volunteers to help run the event are always wanted, please contact Norma if you are able to offer your support. The show also has Equifest, BSPA, RIHS and World championship of colour qualifiers - so hopefully there is something for everyone!

NPS AREA 4 NORTH OF ENGLAND PONY SHOW - MONDAY 30th AUGUST 2010
Schedules will be available later in the year, but arrangements are already well underway. Please put it in your diary now and support your area show, either with entries, sponsorship or with offers of help.

WEBSITE www.npsarea4.co.uk Our website continues in the capable hands of Mrs Elspeth Allen and is widely used for printing schedules and the area newsletters, any ideas for further development would be well received so please speak to either Elspeth or myself.

Just to remind you we can put advertisements in the Newsletter, please contact me if you would like further details - the newsletter reaches over 300 members so is a good marketing outlet.

The Northern Dartmoor Lunch will be on Sunday April 11th starting at 12 noon.
Nicola & Philip Tyler of TopSpec are kindly welcoming everyone into their lovely
home at Middle Park Farm, Pickhill, Thirsk YO7 4JN.
An invitation is extended to all NPS members and friends to enjoy a delicious
chatty lunch with, hopefully, a visit to the stables to view the Tyler's Springwater Dartmoors.
For tickets (Adults £8 - Children under 16 FREE) contact Tracey Whittle, Fellside Farm, Church
Lane, Whitechapel, Nr Preston or tel: 01995 640341 /07752 900128.

And finally, don't forget the committee is here for you, please discuss with us your ideas and suggestions and we will do our best in committee, to address them.

Best regards

Stephen Howard

Welfare Report

Finally we have a respite from the snow, please watch out for signs of mud fever which will be our next curse.
I have also heard of a number of colic attacks due to the lack of water and then the sudden glut of it.
Laminitis is also likely to come to the fore again as the recently rested (hidden by the snow) grass is readily available again.
In summary we all need to be extra vigilant at this time with prevention to all of the above being far kinder than the cure.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy showing and stud season.

Dorothy Cope.
